Mikes 1980's Rail Memory CDs

TWO DISC SET

What you get is a trip to the destination (Eastleigh) starting off with early morning bird song, a distant train. Then we arrive at Fratton with a 3H DEMU powering out of the station. The announcer calls about other trains and then we are off.
You hear another 3H and then we arrive at Eastleigh town yard.

08 shunters are endlessly busy with rakes of wagons and fly shunting in the yard.
Classes 33, 47 and 73 arrive and depart with more freight (lots of speedlink)
4 REP and 8TC sets rush past heading for Bournemouth or Waterloo.
The shunting continues (this is the main part that works so well as a sound effect with model railways) A surprise class 45 arrives with a long rake of hoppers for the terminal at Botley.
Even a class 31 makes an appearance.

Much later on disc one we head off for Reading, pausing briefly at Basingstoke.
At Reading the action continues with classes 47 and 50 powering away towards the West, HSTs scream past and power out too.
Humble mechanical DMUs buzz around, class 31s and 33s arrive on freight.
We end up travelling back to Eastleigh to hear the oh so posh announcer one last time.

The recordings are obviously in mono as they were made on a simple cassette recorder.
Attached to this recorder was a rather good microphone that I was given by a friend who worked in a studio, more than anything that is what provides the sound quality.
The tapes were the originals made in 1980 and played countless times! So I was amazed when with some long hours work the output sounded great on our hi/fi.

All this on two CDs made in two channel mono but with surprisingly good quality. A total of 2 Hours and 32mins of busy railways sounds from a time gone forever!

See what some reviewers have already said!

Hi Mike,
Having now listened to both of the cd's, I must say that they are brilliant!! They certainly brought back the memories.

I eventually got around to listening to the CD's and was very impressed by both sound quality and content.
I tried out the discs on my layout by strategically placing high quality speakers under the baseboard and by using a digital amplifier was able to get a very realistic effect.
In my opinion I would say that the discs would make a great advantage to anyone who wanted to add that little bit of realism to their layout.

I could sit there all day with my eyes shut and think I was standing on the platform back in the 80's, I have never got down to Eastleigh but I can see it all happening in my mind with the sounds on the cd's bringing it to life, a great buy and hoping for more. Yes Mike please let me know if you get the next one done I would love one if it is as good as these two it will be great.
I am going to try to take bits from the cd's to play under my layout to bring it to life, I have a yard on it with class 08 shunting so will try that bit first.
Regards. David
